Wedding stress can be a lot for any bride, and for Princess Diana, it was too much to bear! She appeared stress and it took a toll on her appearance. Before the big day, she began to shed some pounds and it caused an issue for her with fitting in her dress. She even has 15 extensive fittings to make the dress fit properly. “Every time she turned up for a fitting, she had lost more weight,” noted Elizabeth Emmanuel in an interview. “We put it down to nerves. But it did make it incredibly difficult for us to get on with making the dress.” The morning of the wedding she was sewed into the dress.

When the wedding was approaching Charles began to experience some nerves. According to Sally Beddel Smith (royal biographer) in her book about Prince Charles, she said that Charles was still in love with his ex, Camilla Parker-Bowers. He was pressured by his father to end the relationship with her and marry Diana. Smith claims the Prince shed tears the night before marrying Diana. Charles very publicly rekindled his affair with Camilla after Prince William and Harry were born.

Just Like Cinderella

Not only were designers scrambling around, stressing about Diana’s dress, but something else as well. Diana is a little bit taller than other people and she needed shorter heels. Cobbler Clive Shilton explained, “Her main concern was that she wouldn’t appear taller than Prince Charles, and because she was very tall — 5ft 10in — the shoes would have to have a low heel.” Each slipper was very beautiful and detailed. Each one of a kind silk slipper was covered in 542 sequins and 132 pearls and had a “C” and “D” with a love heart painted on the shoes’ hidden arch.

During an interview, he said, “In the evening we all went to a sort of semi-private party and she was there and she seemed incredibly relaxed and happy and I just remember she had a cracking headache too because she wasn’t used to wearing a tiara all morning.” Regardless, Diana wore the Spencer Tiara, which had been in Diana’s family for almost a century.

Everyone wanted to be part of this national holiday that security became a big issue for this day. According to the New York Times, extra security was added to guarantee no funny business. The security measures reportedly cost up to $110 million!

Safety First

Of course, the press was incredibly desperate to sneak some pictures of Diana’s dress. As we mentioned she and the dress designers (Emanuel’s) took unprecedented security measures when designing the dress. They ripped up sketches after showing them to Diana just in case nobody would sneak in and take a peek. They also installed a safe in their studio to keep the designs safe and in secret.

The couple received incredible gifts, well that’s a given. The Reagans sent the royal couple an engraved Steuben glass bowl and also a handmade porcelain centerpiece! Both were truly spectacular. This is just one of the many amazing gifts they received. They also got a special whiskey from Scotland, a matching diamond and sapphire watch, and even 100-year-old silk mittens!

Misery Uncovered

Diana had a happy face on the day of her wedding, but she still had a bit of misery too. In 2017, hidden footage was released that shows Princess Diana looking rather sade she is sitting conversing with her friend Peter Settlen. The footage showed her describing her wedding day as “the worst day of my life.” She added, “If I could write my script I would have my husband go away with his woman and never come back.” She was referring to Camilla.

A hidden secret was revealed after the couple tied the knot. They were related, distant cousins! They were distant cousins! Both Diana and Charles were 16th cousins once removed as they were both descendants of Tudor King, Henry VII. Pretty interesting, right?

Many people assumed Diana was rapidly losing weight because of her wedding day nerves. However, new video footage shows that there may more to the story. Charles allegedly commented Diana that “set something off” in her. He grabbed her waist and said, “Oh, a bit chubby here, aren’t we?” It’s possible that this comment influenced Diana to develop an eating disorder. She reportedly went from a 29-inch waist down to 23.5 inches before her big wedding day.

Charles made several insensitive comments and this is part of the reason it was difficult for her to ignore his relationship with Parker-Bowels. Camilla and the Prince had nicknames for each other: Fred and Gladys. Also, just weeks before the wedding, Charles gave Camilla a bracelet with G and F inscribed on it. Diana only noticed this later.
